Events to aid swine flu victim 's family

By Donnie Fetter
News Editor

Two supper fundraisers will be held this week to benefit the family of Summer Rockefeller.

The 10-year-old Harlem girl last month became the Augusta area's first fatality due to complications of contracting the novel A H1N1 virus, known as swine flu.

A spaghetti supper will be held 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Harlem Baptist Church, followed by a chili supper 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Grovetown Senior Center.

Both benefits are meant to help Summer's parents, Brian and Elizabeth Rockefeller, with medical expenses.

"It's been difficult for them, but they have received an outpouring of prayer from the community and elsewhere," said Christa Hyman, an administrator at Harlem Baptist. "I think they've been blessed by that."

The Rockefellers do not wish to divulge the cost for Summer's treatment, which included a prolonged stay at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, Hyman said.

The cost for the Harlem fundraiser will be $7 per plate.

Advance meal tickets are available at the church, Sunrise Grill restaurants in North Augusta and Martinez, Whitaker Electric in Harlem, Harlem Middle School and Euchee Creek Elementary School, where Summer was a fifth-grader.

Donations will be taken at the chili supper.

Harlem Baptist is accepting donations on behalf of the family.

Those who wish can send donations to the church at P.O. Box 790, Harlem, GA 30814.
