Nature can be an inspiration for many things, including the decorations that will adorn homes this holiday season. From elegant wreaths to tablescapes for the next family gathering, nature can serve up the main ingredients for holiday decorating needs.
To help those who might not envision the creations that pinecones, twigs and acorns can make, Mistletoe State Park will hold a Decorating with Nature workshop Nov. 14 at the park's Nature Center. The workshop will be led by Marilyn Grau.
"Tired of paper turkeys and Pilgrims on your Thanksgiving table?" said Grau. "Why not surprise the family this year with beautiful holiday decorations made from grape vines, pine cones, rocks and other items donated by Mother Nature? You'll love the results."
During the workshop, Grau will lead participants in making table decorations, napkin rings and chargers, among other items. Participants will scour their own yards for all sorts of items that can be used in the workshop.
"Everybody's things will be different, but then look at the woods," said Grau. "There are gnarled trees, rotted trees, weeds, all sorts of things -- maybe not beautiful individually, but collectively a work of art. So, if our work isn't perfect by arranging standards, it's still beautiful."
Participants are encouraged to bring their own baskets, vases or anything they'd like to make an arrangement in.
"Because the park is on Corps of Engineers property, by law we can't gather things from the woods there, so I have to bring stuff from town to use," said Grau.
People must register to participate. The class is geared toward adults, but older children can come if accompanied by an adult. The workshop is not suitable for small children or large groups, Grau said, adding that an ideal class size is five to 10 participants.
