Friday is the deadline for students to request a transfer from Harlem High School.
Because Harlem failed for the second year in a row to make adequate yearly progress on graduation rates as required by the federal No Child Left Behind legislation, students are allowed to request a transfer to a higher-performing school.
Columbia County school officials have designated the new Grovetown High School as the school to which Harlem students can request a transfer.
Graduation rates measure the number of a school's students completing high school within four years. The state standard for last year was 75 percent. Harlem High's graduation rate for the 2008-09 school year was 64.1 percent, which is 4.2 percent less than the previous school year.
Because it failed to meet the standard for two consecutive years, Harlem High is listed as a "needs improvement" school and must offer school choice.
Students must make their own travel arrangements to Grovetown High if they choose to transfer.
