Financial seminar

Church of the Holy Comforter is a host site for Dave Ramsey's Town Hall for Hope at 8 p.m. Thursday at 473 Fury's Ferry Road, Martinez. In the free event broadcast live nationwide, Ramsey will address the recession, foreclosures and money issues. During the second half of the broadcast, Ramsey will answer questions live. Evans yard sale

The Evans High School band will hold a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the school.

Essay contest

Heartsong Animal Rescue is holding a "Be Kind to Animals Essay Contest" in recognition of the American Humane Association's 95th annual Be Kind to Animals Week, May 3-9. The contest is open in two categories to children ages 8-12, and teens 13-17 for a 100- to 150-word essay. Entries must be postmarked by May 1. For entry forms, go to www.heartsonganimalrescue.com.

German Club

Educators meet

The Columbia County Retired Educators Association will meet at 8:45 a.m. Friday in front of Sacred Heart Cultural Center for the Garden Speaker and Garden Festival. Wills clinic

Friday is the deadline to register for a free May 2 wills clinic by the Georgia Legal Services Program. For information, call (706) 721-2327.

Essay contest

Noon Friday is the deadline for the Augusta Jewish Federation essay contest for middle- and high-school students on the topic, "What Israel Means to Me." The contest is open to children of all faiths, with first-place winners receiving a cash prize of $200. Winners will be announced May 3. E-mail entries to augustafed1@knology.net.
